The Problem of Advanced Maternal Age



Abstract
The data presented are based on 176 cases of mothers with advanced age, 35 years or more (including 159 cases of ages 35- 39 years and 17 cases of age ¡Ã40 up to 48 years) among total of 9933 delivereis seen in Ewha Womans University Hospital, Seoul during Past 5 years(1985~1989). As the control subjects 178 cases of age 20 - 29 years were random selected from the respective period.
In the present study will be discussed on both maternal and perinatal risks in order to attercpt to be a beneficial additions to the precise recognition and prevention of older mothe er¢¥s risks especially in the low socio -economic areas where prone to be at risk. The summary of tl.e results were as follows.
1. For the past 5 years the incidence of gravides with advanced age 35 years or more (2.5`,¢¥¢¥:) showed no any decreased trend.
2. In the maternal risks 1) Hypertension was most common antenatal complication in the mothers with advanced age( ¡Ã 35 years, or ¡Ã40 years) compared with younger mothers, eq., severe preeclampsia accounted for 6-12% vs. 3%, and increased 2-3. 5 folds, chronic hypertension 2 -6% is. 0.6% and also increased 4:- 10 folds compared with younger mothers.
2) Gestational diabetes accounted for 1.1% vs. 0.6% in aging mothers(> 35 years) with 2 folds incretent (P<0.05)
